Now, let’s get familiar with the work sheet.
Each of the business levels is divided up so they should be easy to spot. The diagram below shows you how the levels break down.
So now that you’re familiar with the structure your first task is to identify which level you’re at today.
Take a look at the descriptions for each of the levels; Idea, Side-Hustle, Time-for-Money, Managing-the-Business, and On-the Business.
See which of these descriptions feels most like where you are at the moment. You might feel like you’re in between two level; this is fine, we’ll talk about that in a minute.
Now that you know where you are we can take stock. There are two areas that are vital; we need to look back, and look ahead.
Look at the level before the one you’re at, can you check all of the criteria that were needed to move on? For example; if you’ve found yourself at ‘Managing the Business’ can you look back to the previous stage of ‘Time for Money’ and check all of the criteria there?
When you look at the criteria to move forward in the levels, in this example this would be to move up to ‘Working on the business, not in the business’, do these criteria match your current business goals?
What we often find is that, where there are challenges in a business, there are steps in the levels that have been skipped over and this means that some of the foundational elements of building the business are not in place.
In some cases it’s necessary to go back multiple levels, build what is missing and then move forwards.
By using the levels framework systematically and frequently across the business we find weaknesses and can build business plans to address those areas and retrospectively check off the requirements for the business.
